Apples!

This week we studied apples.  We did some great writing about apples and even heard a few books about Johnny Appleseed.  He is one funny character.

Our book buddies came today. We weighed and measured our apples.  We got to use balance scales!

On Thursday we were Letter People

Check out the D!  It is made up of 1 big line and 1  big curve.

P- 1 big line and 1 little curve

In math we played a fun game of spill those apples.  We learned about different ways to make the number 9.

It was fun to work with a partner to play this game.

Heat Sources

This week we have had a lot of fun investigating what happens when you heat and cool things.  We talked about heat sources and learned that things can melt then they are heated and they can freeze when they are cooled.

In writing workshop this week we have talked about how pictures can tell a story just like words.  We read many books that told stories through only pictures.  Check out this friends awesome story!

In math this week we worked on counting and learned that counting is very important in the real world.  We learned about how store owners use counting to take inventory.  Here we care counting stickers to make sets!

We have been working on our wonderful writing skills as well.  Here we are writing a morning messagee.  Check out the way we use our fingers to leave spaces between out words.

I can't believe we have already been in school for 5 weeks.  It has really flown by!
Just a few reminders:
Please bring an apple on Monday for Apple week.
Please return your field trip permission slip with your money as soon as possible.
I hope to see you all at the Sock Hop tonight form 6-8 here at the school.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Cateripllars are GREEN

This week we finished up our study of out 5 senses.  This morning we had so much fun visiting all of the different Kindergarten classrooms and learning about a different one of our senses in each one.

In our classroom we studies our sense of taste.  We learned that things can taste sweet, salty, bitter or sour!

Our word wall words this week were green and me.  We talked about all of the different words we can read if we know the word me, for example be, the, she, he we...
We played lots of fun counting games in math like roll and record, grab and count, and we practiced subitizing with ten frames.
We practiced sharing our writing.  WE learned that when you share writing there has to be a listener and a reader/writer.  The listeners job is to think of questions to ask that would help the reader/writer make their story better.
We had fun working in afternoon centers.  We are learning how to problem solve when we have a problem with a friend.  It is always important to ask the friend to stop before reporting to an adult.
This afternoon we had a special visit from our second grade book buddies.
Keep practicing those pencil grips.  It takes a while to retrain a hand that has a formed a bad habit.

In hand writing we practiced the letters R,N, and the number 2.  We also talked about pushing down on our pencil when we write so that we can make straight lines.
Next week we will be talking about Nursery Rhymes and the color yellow.  We will also add the word the to the word wall.

Have a fantastic weekend!  Enjoy the cooler weather!

B-L-U-E spells blue!

This week has been busy busy busy here in room 303!
Our color word this week is blue.  We wrote some fabulous books about the color blue and loved singing the blue song as fast as we can.

For handwriting we practice making the letters E,D, and the number 1.  We practiced always starting our letters at the top.  We are also continuing to retrain our hands to hold that pencil correctly.  Please remind us when we are writing at home to use our correct pencil grip!
On Wednesday we went to Guidance with Ms. Sayklay.  We learned about Rachel's Challenge.  We are doing our best to do acts of kindness for those around us.  When you spot one of us doing a random act of kindness at home please fill out the yellow chain link and send it back in to school to add to our class chain.
We also had a class  meeting about bullying.  Our school is a bully free zone.  We signed the Kindergarten promise not to be a bully and to report bullying.
This week in math we have been practicing math stations.  We have been working hard on using our whisper voices when we are working around our classroom so that we can respect others.
During Writer's Workshop we have been talking about authors.  We leaned about what authors look and sounds like.  We learned that authors write about things that they know.  In our Writing journals we made our first topic list.
We have learned all about our 5 senses this week during science.  It was been fun talking about ways that we explore the world around us by using our senses.

R-E-D red!

This wee has been another great week!  We have started adding words to our word wall.  This week we added the words red, a, and I.  These are words that your child should be able to read and write correctly from memory.

During science this week we learned about weather.  We talked about the 4 season and what the weather would be like in each season.  We also learned about how the weather affects the way we dress and the activities that we do.

We continued to work on learning each other's names and establishing classroom and school routines and procedures.  I am so very impressed how fast your kiddos have caught on to our classroom procedures

We had so much fun wearing our red on Thursday.  Kindergarten was quite a sight to see walking around the school all decked out in red.

This week in math we practiced forming numbers correctly (from the top top top!).  We also worked on some assessments so that we can begin our leveled math groups in the near future.

Our handwriting lesson this week was how to hold a pencil correctly.  Check out your child's pencil grip.  It would be WONDERFUL if you could help reinforce correct pencil grip at home.  This is one of the most difficult things to correct.

We sang and sang and sang this week!  Ask your kiddo to teach you the pencil grip song, the red song or the environmental print song.

Speaking of environmental print.  I am blow away at all of the wonderful words that your children know from around their environment.  We have made our environmental print wall and it is so much fun to point and read together.

Don't forget to work on those ABC quilt pieces this weekend.  We already have a few that have been returned and we can't wait to get that quilt on the wall.

Above is a picture of Mat Man.  Mat Man is made up of all of the pieces of the letters that we write.  We will be using these pieces to explore the size and shape of letters throughout the year.

One Friday we had a busy busy day.  We went to istation for the first time (our computer literacy assessment program, you will hear more about this at conferences in October)  We also went to the library for the first time and meet our book buddies.

Have a fantastic 3 day weekend!  I can't wait to hear about the fun that you all had on Tuesday!
